I am often asked how to improve your memory. I’m also often asked what can I do to prevent dementia?
The simplest answer is have good genetics. If there is no family history of Alzheimer’s or progressive dementia then you’re less likely to also become dementia. If your dementia is of the vascular type, then it becomes more important to take care of your health. Specifically, you must manage health problems such as hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, and high cholesterol. You must also manage sleep apnea which leaves you at risk for heart attacks and strokes if not properly managed, as well as oxygen deprivation. You must also eliminate use or abuse of nicotine, alcohol, and other substances. Other factors in preventing memory decline include continuing to learn and challenge yourself, proper nutrition, and exercise.
